CPB Streaming Survey Wiki

In early August, as part of its ongoing negotiations with SoundExchange to establish a performance copyright royalties schedule, CPB, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, asked IMA to design and conduct a national streaming survey to determine the overall scope and volume of online streaming at public radio station websites. IMA proposed a survey of about 110 stations, selected by three criteria (1) stations or regional networks with a weekly broadcast AQH over 10,000; (2) stations with a reputation for high-quality, unique music, such as KEXP and WWOZ; and (3) a represenative sample of public stations based on format and market size.

Public Media Metrics

IMA has created a system standard for web metrics based on the Google Analytics service. Stations/programs/organizations are strongly encouraged to install Google Analytics to facilitate performance comparisons and development of best practices across the public media web universe.

Fundraising and Marketing sessions

Team members: Kevin Dando, PBS; Melinda Driscoll, APM; Angela Lunter, PBS

Potential sessions:

Getting online "buzz" - How can public broadcasters tap into the viral power of the web to draw attention to our content in a way that's practival given limited resources and in a way that's aligned with our public service mission? How can we get our loyal audience to spread the word about our programming? Topics covered will include outreach to bloggers, effective use of wikipedia, online trends in social media to pay attention to. Panelists: Kevin Dando, PBS (confirmed); Brendan Greeley, The Economist (confirmed); Bill Tancer, Hitwise (invited, not confirmed).

Making your brand work online - With our audiences finding and using the content we produce in ways we never anticipated and often can't control, how do we remain strong stewards of our brands? How do we ensure our content is findable, easily accessible, and appropriately identified as ours? Let's share strong examples of how to maintain consistent and intelligent brand standards for web sites, emails, RSS feeds, podcasts, online audio, online video, and other new platforms. Panelists: Tim Olson or alternate, KQED (confirmed); NPR representative (in process); Bryan Finke, Nike (confirmed).

Existing and Emerging Sponsorship Formats - A primer on online advertising formats/models, including the latest and greatest, with a frank discussion about what does/might work for public media entities and what may not. Formats to be covered include: Display messages (banners, buttons, tiles, pop-ups, rich media, expandables), Text links (Google, Yahoo) , Streaming video (pre-, post-, and mid-roll, overlays, message lengths), Downloadable media (podcasts, vodcasts), Directories (yellow pages), E-mail advertising (text, banners), Mobile (short codes, WAP display messages).

Moderator: Bryan Moffett, NPR Digital Media (confirmed); Panelists: Chris Johnson - Brightcove, Nate Westheimer - NPB (confirmed), possible LA-based interactive agency person (TBD).

Optimizing Site Message Inventory - How do you determine the best use of your station’s remnant online message inventory — if you don’t sell it to corporate sponsors, do you use it for membership offers? To drive shop/ancillary product sales? Encourage tune-in? Promote your affiliate relationships? Public media stations can earn revenue from each of these opportunities, but how do you determine the right mix of messages that maximizes revenue while minimizing commercialism? You’ll hear from stations that are identifying objectives, setting goals and evaluating the cost benefit of each opportunity in what is often limited message space.

Moderator: Marlene Schneider (confirmed); Panelists: Corey Lewis - WBUR (confimed), Angela Lunter - PBS (confirmed), Ann Lammers - WGBH (confirmed)
